FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE. . .
RHODODENDRON CONVENTION IS OVER AND IT WAS A HUGE
SUCCESS!
 |
The national
Rhododendron Society convention is coming to our area in April, 2008.
I am president of the Ozark Chapter and we are hosting this event in
Tulsa, Oklahoma. We expect 400 people to attend.
Here's your chance to learn how to grow Rhododendrons in hot climates. We
will also have a huge plant sale with our toughest heat-tolerant
Rhododendrons, Japanese maples, and rare perennials. John Thornton's
plants that were hybridized in Louisiana are hard to find but will be
featured at our sale.
Garden tours will include Lendonwood Gardens in Grove, OK. Leonard Miller
has over 500 Rhododendrons, over 50 of the largest specimens in our area
of my favorite Japanese maples, azaleas, bonsai, and very large
collections of conifers, daylillies, etc. The Tea House is world class and
looks out over a koi pond and large Japanese maple dissectums. We will see
in bloom an incredible collection of Chinese Tree Peonies that have
spectacular large, bright, and silky flowers.
Other gardens to see are the new Linnaeus Garden, the renovated Philbrook
Museum garden, Woodward Park, Gilcrease Museum's azaleas and dogwoods,
Muskogee's Honor Heights Park with 50 year old azaleas, and several Tulsa
private gardens.
Speakers will include Tjis Huisman from Holland, Steve Krebbs, research
scientist testing disease resistance of Rhododendrons, and me, Keith
Johansson, talking about the gardens of our members and the trials and
errors with Rhododendrons in hot climates.
This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see a national Rhododendron
convention in our area. The Ozark Chapter has around 40 members and meets
twice a year in a five state area. You are invited to come.
Once the 2006 convention in San Francisco is over you will be able to get
details and register on the ARS Website: www.rhododendron.org.
